Scania R480 - P.E. Kristensen

In 2007 two new Scania R480 8x4 tractors with Palfinger PK150002 cranes where taken into service. This is the first one, during delivery at Roskilde at the end of March.

These 2 trucks replace the older Palfinger PK120000 cranes, those where mounted on Scania R144G-460 8x4 chassis. Click here to a report about one of them. In the background stands one of the two Scania R420 trucks with PK100002 crane that are also new in the fleet.

In July 2007 I visited Kristensen again, this time there was less sun so that I could take good photos from all directions. Here it is coupled to a Broshuis 3-axled extendable semi-lowloader.

The chassis is a Scania R480 in 8x4 layout. They explicitily chose the 6-cylinder engine because it is lighter than a V8. The weight of the truck is very important when you are mounting such heavy cranes like this. With a V8 the front axle load is usually getting to high.

A side-view shows the dimensions of the crane. It is more than the length of the cab. The own weight of a PK150002 G is about 13,5 tonnes. The empty weight of the truck therefore is about 29 tonnes.

The crane is the G model, it extends 8x hydraulically to a length of 18,8 meters. There it lifts 4,8 tonnes. With the 2 manual extensions the outreach becomes 23,9 meters, with a lifting capacity of 3,15 tonnes at that distance.

The trailer is very short, this way the vehicle length (when not extended) is within the permitted legth. The truck can drive like this without having to use a permit. In the background stands one of the two Scania’s with a Palfinger 120000 crane, both trucks have been sold in the meantime.

Both PK150002 cranes are without jibs, they are mainly used for the more heavier lifting- and transport jobs. The jobs that require more height or outreach are carried out with the 5 other trucks with jib that the company has.

The space between the axles at this side was used to mount a dieseltank. This one is purpose made so that it uses the available space very good.

Spot the differences! This is the second R480 with PK150002, it was delivered about a month later.

The crane is also a G with 2 manual parts. The maximum lifting capacity of these cranes is 40 tonnes.

The trucks only differ in small details. Both have been built by Hadsten Tipservice.

Behind this Scania also hangs a 3-axled Broshuis extandle semi-lowloader. The last axle is lifted.

Both 150’s beside eachother.

A better view on the crane. Both cranes are equiped with a winch. Also notice the fine details at the truck, like the cutaway part to make room for the bottom part of the telescopic boom. Also the small beam that prevents that the tilting front leg can come in touch with the cab is such a thing. Above the front legs the oiltank and the coolers are mounted.

The aluminium rims don’t only look good, they also save weight.

Two very nice and heavy workhorses !!
