Retro Classics 2013 - 2

This is not an Iveco but a german built Titan, back in the days that they where still situated in Appenweier. The model uses the base technology of a Turbostar and is called Z 32.500 FI 6x6, what means that it has a total weight of 32 tons, a 500 hp engine and has 6x6 drive.

Behind the cab they mounted a tower that holds extra cooling for the engine and the gearbox, the air filters for the engine and 2 big exhausts. This Titan was equiped on customer demands (back then the Schluchseewerke from the black forest) with a big winch that was mounted in this tower. It's a Rotzler winch with a pulling force between 11 and 15 tonnes.

Pulling force is provided by the 17,2 liter V8 engine from the Turbostar series. It is connected to a Allison fully automatic gearbox with torque converter.

At the rear of the chassis the winch cable comes out again, this is begin guided through the chassis. We see a heavy drawbar coupling here, meant for pulling heavy drawbar trailers. Underneath the demountable body there is a fifth wheel, but I guess that hasn't been used very often.

Not a lot of these Titan's have been made. Beside this unit an second one was delivered to a german customer, and 4 more went to swiss customers, making 6 in total. Another unit in 8x8 layout was built for export. Two of the swiss units are still at service with their original owners.

The other side of the tower, here we see the 2nd big cooler that is necessary to cool away the heat at low vehicle speeds.

The Turbostar cab had to be mounted higher because of the driven front axle. The engine has to raise because of that axle and so must the cab raise also, the height difference was filled out nicely. This side of the truck holds the large dieseltank.

The front has gotten a heavy duty bumper with which you can push or pull heavy trailers or assist as 2nd pushing truck in a bigger combination. Despite that the truck was built in 1992, it is still looking very good. After it left service at the Schluchseewerken, it has now fallen into collectors hands and will stay in Germany.
