Retro Classics 2013 - 3

After the Titan I got to this Mercedes SK 3550 8x4, a truckmodel that was built at the swiss Mercedes plant in Arborn, called NAW. This one was owned by Fischer, a construction company.

The tractor is equiped with both a fifth wheel and a drawbar coupling. The short wheelbase was important, as the truck was also used with a tipper in the daily work of the company (when no heavy loads needed to be transported).

The tower is still the old version that they used to mount on 3544 models, with the dieseltank in the middle. The oiltank is placed there aswell and both sides hold large exhausts.

This tower is more compact than the versions originally used on the 3550 tractors, but therefore it doesn't hold the addition cooler that those units have. It can be expected that this unit wasn't used for very heavy loads then.

This Mercedes gets it's power from a 14,6 liter V8 that delivers 500 hp.

The current topmodel of Mercedes was parked longside it, this 4165 was built by Titan in Sulzbach. This is the 8x6 version, only the 8x8 version can provide even more traction. It is being driven by a 650 hp strong V8 engine.

The version that is shown here originates from a regular 6x6 that is being converted by Titan by mounting a 2nd front axle, installing the Voith VIAB plus cooling, installing the tower behind the cab and offcourse strengthening the chassis including the heavy front bumper.

Here we see the tower, to the left is the hydraulic tank, at the bottom the dieseltank, top right is the cooling of the VIAB and left of that are other parts like the battery compartment and some air barrels.

This tractor comes prepared as it has 2 drawbar couplings and a cardanic fifth wheel. The only thing missing is are the connectors for a ballast box.

A top view, from which it is visible that the truck has got a long wheelbase, mainly caused by the 8x6 drive. The drive shaft going to the front axle can be seen just left of the AdBlue tank.
