Volvo FM12 - Karsten V. Olesen

In the beginning of 2007 I found this Volvo of Karsten V. Olesen from Skjern (DK) beside the highway.

It’s an FM12 in 8x4 layout with a 3-axled drawbar trailer.

The interesting feature of the truck ist the very rare crane that is mounted on it. It is a crane that is built in Denmark by MFH Hydraulik from Kolding, a company that unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore. The crane is of the type MT 170.

Notice that the crane is very low. This is mainly caused by the foot of the crane that has been built as low as possible. This gives a total height of about 3 meters (when the crane is rotated to the rear). During road transport the 4x hydraulic extending boom is lying over the roof of the cab.

Here we have a better view on the crane. It has a maximum lifting capacity of about 185 ton/mtr!! This value is reached at 6,6 meters where a load of 28 tonnes can be lifted. From this distance onward up to 12 meters the capacity is a rather constant 170 ton/mtr. From this distance on it sinks to about 140 ton/mtr. This was clearly one of the stronger cranes in the days that is was built, the lifting values exceed those of an Effer 2100!! Some more lifting values:
Horizontal:
4,5 mtr - 37 tonnes
8,8 mtr - 19 tonnes
16 mtr - 9 tonnes (maximum outreach)
Boom at 60 degrees:
4,6 mtr distance / 11,5 mtr height - 28 tonnes
6,8 mtr distance / 15 mtr height - 20 tonnes
7,9 mtr distance / 17 mtr height - 18 tonnes

The jib is transported on top of the trailer. This one gives an outreach of almost 31 meters where it will lift 1,7 tonnes. Full lifting capacity is reached when the truck has a piece of counterweight of 7,5 tonnes on it’s chassis, directly behind the cab.

Good stability is provided by the 6 outriggers. The 2 rear outriggers have swivvels at the top, they can rotate the rear to increase the distance between crane and the foots.

An oilcooler has been mounted to the back of the crane. Remarkable is also the gigantic slewing bearing that is equiped with double slewmotors. There is a winch mounted underneath the telescopic boom.

A better view at the 6x hydraulically extending jib.

A, as far as I know, crane that only has been built once! That is one of the reasons why this crane belongs to my favourits, a nice deviation of the well known crane brands... Originaly this crane was built for the company P. Fournaise from Fredericia. Since 2007 it is owned by Olesen.
