Scania R480 - Frank Segall
This Scania R480 crane truck was added to the fleet of Frank Segall from Esbjerg (DK) in April 2009.

The base of this crane unit is a Scania R480 8x4 with a short wheelbase, the 480 hp 6-cilinder engine and the half long cab. The short length of the chassis gives good manoeuvrability.

This sideview clearly shows that the rear mounted Effer 1750 takes away all the space on the chassis, it can't transport a load anymore. The height of the folded crane is exactly 4 meters.

Toolboxes are mounted between the axles. Beside those are the racks for the support plates for the outriggers, they can be rolled out.

The crane is an Effer 1750 in standard version (not the L version). It is the 6x hydraulically extending version with a lifting torque of 121 ton/mtr and an outreach of 15,24 meters. A load of 7,61 tonnes can still be lifted at that distance.

Closer to the truck, for example at 9,5 meters, the crane can lift a load of up to 12,4 tonnes.

From this point of view we see that the oiltank is mounted in front of the crane on the floor. To the right, behind the cab, they mounted a steel rack for the chains and hooks.

This side also has a support plate holder, mounted beside the dieseltank. The side of the floor holds several small toolboxes.

The own weight of this truck is around 30,5 tonnes, the rest of the available weight (up to 32 tonnes total) can be used for other materials like chains.

The crane is being set up. Because this crane is so heavy and also rear mounted, it needs an extra set of rear outriggers for the stability. This beam with 2 supports extends 1,8 meters to the rear and gives the crane full stability when it is lifting to the rear.

Segall mainly uses the crane in the harbour of Esbjerg for offshore industry projects. It often has to lift heavy parts or chains on/off the ships and platforms. Beside that is will also be used for machinery installation, another specialism of Segall and this crane is perfect for such complex lifts.

A small winch is mounted below the telescopic boom.

The jib gives the crane more outreach. It is the heavy duty version that extends 6x hydraulically and also has 2 manual extensions. It has a capacity of about 40 ton/mtr and gives a total hydraulic outreach of 27,65 meters. The 2 manual parts give a total outreach of about 31,5 meters. The jib can lift a load of 2,44 tonnes at 27,65 meters.

More impressive are the values of this heavy duty jib (recognizable by the dual cilinders) when the main crane is in the vertical position. The maximum load that it can lift, to a height of about 17 meters, is 11 tonnes.

A interesting and nice crane truck!
