Scania R164G-580 - Schaumann

Brandnew combination!! Both the tractor aswell as the trailer are new. The tractor is a Scania R164G-580 that is special build by Laxa for Scania. It is the first unit of this type to be sold in Germany. The trailer is a Golfhofer with a special structure to transport windmill parts.

Laxa is a company that builds all the special vehicles for Scania. Scania tractors for heavy transport are equiped by them with a torque converter (ZF WSK-440) and a appropriate cooling. The cooling is being mounted in a rack behind the cab.

A detail is the missing cooling grill (only on 580’s) that normally is mounted above/behind the mud-guard. Because the truck now has a ZF gearbox it doesn’t need the auxilary-cooling of Scania anymore.

Behind the cab we find the tower where all components are mounted that didn’t fitted to the chassis.

The tower is needed because there isn’t enough spare room between the axles to fit al the components.
In the tower we find: dieseltank, spotlights and air barrels. The raised exhaust is also mounted on this side.

On the other side we find the most important component; the extra cooling. The large cooler on this side cools the engine. A torque converter cooler is placed between the tower and the cab (not visible). To keep the engine and the gearbox at apropriate temperatures during heavy usage, this kind of cooling is neccesary.

The fixed position of the fifth wheel is also a remarkable fact. This means that the truck will only be used with large lowloaders like the already coupled Goldhofer.

A view from the side. Here we see that the 2nd steering axle is mounted slightly forwards.
