Near Milan, at a gasstation, I could photograph this Scania of Nizzoli Trasporti. |
It's a Scania R164G-580 8x4 tractor with a ZF WSK 440 torque converter and a ZF Ecosplit gearbox. Notice the heavy drawbar at the front, with a coupling mounted to it.
There is also a heavy drawbar coupling mounted to the rear of the chassis, a version that is seen often in Italy. The tower behind the cab was filled with a toolbox at this side.
A interesting Cometto trailer is hanging behind the Scania, it is used to transport windmill parts. The first unit consists of a large goose neck, a bed and 3-axle lines. The bed holds a turntable on which the beams of the windmilladapter are rotating.
The beams at the reat are supported by a 5-axled Cometto module, built from a 2- and a 3-axled unit.
A power unit stands on this module to provide the hydraulics for the suspension and the steering.
Here we can see that the beams at the front are longer than those at the rear, the location of the turntable gives a good division of the weight over the tractor and the axle-lines.
A big radiator is mounted at this side of the tower to provide more cooling power, this is necessary to cool away the heat produced by the retarder and torque converter. It also necessary to cool away the heat of the engine during low speed travel.
At the front of the goose neck there is also a power unit, this powers the suspension and steering of these axles.
This combination of Nizzoli was also parked at this gasstation. It is a R560 6x4 with a 4-axled Faymonville lowloader and a 6-axled Faymonville semi lowloader on top of that.
