Scania R500 - Brouwer Zwaartransport

In march 2007 Brouwer Speciaaltransport from Nieuwegein (NL) has taken this R500 10x4 truck into service.

The base of the truck is a 8x4 chassis. In the Netherlands, at Scania Beers B.V. the 5th axle was mounted at the rear of the chassis.

Behind the cab VDA Konstruktie placed a Palfinger PK150002. It’s a special version that has the cranefoot mounted on top of the outriggers. Normally this is only possible up to the 100002 model. This is the first 150002 that was built in this way. Large advantage is of course the smaller dimensions of the crane. The crane itself is also lighter than the version with the crane mounted behind the outriggers.

It’s a PK150002 G, which means that the boom extends 8x hydraulically. This version has an outreach of 18,8 meter and can lift 4,8 tonnes there. Closer, for example at 12,4 meters, the crane lifts 7,54 tonnes or 11,5 tonnes at 8,6 meters. The maximum lifting capacity is 105,4 ton/mtr.

The compact dimensions of the crane are important as the truck had to be equiped with a loading floor that can carry a 20-foot container.

The loading floor is, for a larger part, made of steel as the truck will regulary transport railway-maintenance machines. These cause high point-loads that the floor has to support.

The 5-axled chassis, the strong Palfinger and the robust loading floor all have their weight, this gives an empty weight of the truck of about 36 tonnes. The truck has a drawbar coupling at the rear so that it can be combined with a 3-axled drawbar trailer.

The 47 tonnes of total-weight are archieved with these axle loads: 2 front axles of 9 tonnes, a tandem with 19 tonnes and 10 tonnes on the last axle.

Here we see again how compact the Palfinger is. Between the crane and cab they mounted some good looking raised exhausts. The coolers of the crane are mounted at this side, aswell as the oiltank that hangs at the chassis. Behind the oilcoolers there a small oiltank for the electric-hydraulic steering rear-axle.

This truck could be seen in RTL Transportwereld (Dutch TV programm), click here to view both parts.
The titels are called:
