Renault Kerax 450 - LMS73

This is the new crane-truck of LMS 73 (Logistique Manutention Stockage - Dep. 73) from St. Alban Leysse, a place beside Chambèry (F).

It’s a Renault Kerax with 450 hp in the 8x4 version.

Behind the floor stands a STB 1200.4, a crane of the italian manufacturer Stern. Four outriggers have been mounted to the rear side, more about those later on. The oiltank of the crane is mounted between the headbord and the cab.

It is a crane that extends 4x to a length of 11,65 meters and has a maximum lifting capacity of 93,3 ton/mtr. The lifting table is compareble to that of an Effer 1050 4S or a Fassi F1100.24, it is a bit stronger than a Palfinger PK100002C.

Below is the lifting table, those 40,5 tonnes are lifted at a special hook.
2,3 mtr - 40,5 tonnes
4,7 mtr - 19,85 tonnes
6,3 mtr - 14,4 tonnes
7,95 mtr - 11,25 tonnes
9,65 mtr - 9,15 tonnes
11,65 mtr - 7,52 tonnes

The front legs are tipable. They don’t tip to the front or rear like normal legs but they tip outwards.

The company LMS73 mainly transports transformers for Schneider Electric. These can way up to about 16 tonnes, a weight that canbe handled well with this crane.

The transformer is transported on this 2-axled Verem center-axle drawbar trailer.

Later on the crane was unfolded. The extra set of outriggers can be seen good here. These outriggers cannot only extend but they can also swing to the sides (not the case here). This provides good stability when something is lifted to one of the rear corners of the truck. A second reason, I guess, is the fact that with these swing legs it is possible to set them up with the drawbar trailer still connected to the truck.

To have enough stability when lifting to the rear, the truck has to be ballasted at the front. During the foto-shoot there was a counterweight at the loading floor. This weight is not necessary anymore, it is replaced by a steel-grain filling in the headbord of the floor.

At the bottom of the telescopic boom (where the cylinder is mounted) the special hook for the 40,5 ton load can be seen. This hook is placed as far to the center of the crane as possible to reduce the bending torque on the crane.
