Kenworth T800w - Combined Transport
I was in the USA for my work in 2014. I stayed in Rochelle (Illinois) and could often take pictures at the local truck stop. One time this heavy haulage combination of Combined transport came rolling in for some diesel.
Here this truck is already about 3000 km away from it's homebase in Central Point (Oregon) in the west of the USA.
The trailer is being pulled by a Kenworth T800w 6x4 tractor. As trucks in the USA are still mostly build according to the customers specification, I can't tell you the exact setup of this specific tractor. The "w" in the type indicates that this is the heavy version. It's recognizable by the wider hood that offers space for a larger cooler.
Behind the Kenworth hangs an impressive trailer, made by Aspen. Up first comes a 3-axled jeep dolly.
On the jeep dolly rests a very long goose neck. It is a 2 parted piece, so with 2 lengths. If they use the dolly, they use the long neck, and the short version is used when it is connected directly to the tractor. Then the front part of the goose neck is tipped upwards.
Behind that comes a lowbed that carries the load, a transformer in this case. According to the Aspen website it is an E-series trailer with roughly 85 tons capacity when combined with a 4-alxed tractor unit.
The lowbed itself is a 3-axled version. By docking an extra set of 3 axles to it, it becomes a 6-axled version.
Here you can see how this module is connected. It looks like the last module only steers by this pivot point, so without steering axles.
A rather long combination!
Here we see that the last set of axles can steer.
Filled up on diesel, so the trip continues. Two pick-up trucks acted as support vehicles.
The T800 base cab is the front part. The sleeper cab then get's added according to the customers specification.
The entry road to this truckstop is quit spacious, so even a long combination like this didn't have any problems here.
It is clear that there are no steering axles under this trailer.
And then he went on with his trip. Really impressive to at least see it once!
