DAF XF 95.530 - Van Egdom

The company P. van Egdom from Heist op den Berg (B) is a long-term DAF-customer. For that reason some very special DAF vehicles can be found in their fleet. This is one of the two new 4-axled DAF tractors that has been specially adapted for the special transport.

The base for this tractor is a DAF XF 95.530 8x4 FTM.

The front axle and the tandem have leaf springs. The steered 2nd front axle is air suspended and liftable.

The adaption for heavy transport has been done by the local DAF dealer. Part of the conversion was this tower. It houses the large dieseltank, toolboxes and an oil system for the trailers. The oiltank for that is mounted to the right of the dieseltank.

Also the mounting of the fifth wheel is much heavier. The cardanic fifth wheel is mounted onto a heavy subframe. This provides a good division of the load over a larger part of the chassis. The rear-end of the chassis is also heavily modified to provide a solid mounting place for the 2 drawbar couplings. The 2 twistlock-holders can be used to mount a ballastbox.

An important part of the conversion cannot be seen on these pictures, but has been made in the driveline. The normal gearbox has been exchanged for a heavier handshifted model with a ZF WSK 440 torque converter.

The additional cooling that is needed for the torque converter is mounted at the right side of the tower.

The tractor can also be used to push a heavy transport. Therefore it has gotten a heavy drawbar coupling at the bumper together with the necessary air supply connectors.

The technical changes make this unit a nice exception on the many normal FTM’s that have already been delivered!
