Utrecht 2000 - 2 - Scania's of Brouwer

One of the highlights of the zwaartransportdag 2000 was this Scania P144G-530 in 10x4 layout. This truck has been heavily modified for the customer; Brouwer transport of Nieuwegein. The trailer is a 5-axled Nooteboom. Reason for the modification to 5 axles: Driving with total vehicle weights of 100 tonnes without the use of a dolly. Reason for the modification to the small cab: Letting booms of constuction equipment lay over the roof during transportation.

The most modifications have been done by Beers. The truck started it’s life as a 8x4 chassis with a normal “R” cab. It was equiped with the heaviest Scania V8 with 530 hp and a Scania torque converter. The chassis had a long wheelbase. This truck was modified to create the space needed for a 5th axle. Therefore a lot of chassiscomponents had to be moved to a rack behind the cab (see picture below). Then it was shipped to Sweden where te axle was mounted.

To create space for the 5th axle, most of the chassiscomponents like air barrels, battery compartment and dieseltank had to move to a rack behind the cab. The rest of the rack was filled with tool-boxes. Between the rack and the cab there is a strut that prevents the damageing of the roof.

A view in the interior of this special Scania. After the 5th axle was placed, they exchanged the “R” cab for a much lower “P” cab. Therefore a few modifications where necessary. Here we see how wide the engine-tunnel has been made to create enough room to house the large V8 engine. It’s obvious that is needs more space than the 6-line engine.

For a proper axle load distribution it is necessary that the fifth wheel is mounted far to the front of the truck, so that the 3 front axles also get the right amount of load. The goose neck of the trailer has been lengthened too enable this fifht wheel position. In order to use this tractor also with other trailers, they mounted the fifth wheel moveable.

Other trucks of Brouwer

A Scania T143E of Brouwer in 8x4 layout. This Scania is, just like most of Brouwers heavy transport tractors, equiped with a Scania torque converter. The trailer is a Scheurle moduletrailer.

Behind the cab they mounted a dieseltank and some tool-boxes. Here we also see the strut that protects the cab.

A somewhat older Scania R143E-500 of Brouwer. It still has the classic 2+2 axle layout, instead of the nowedays more common used 1+3 solution. The trailer is a 3-axled Nooteboom. The load is a railroad maintenance machine of Strukton from Utrecht.

A Scania T143E-450 with a 4-axled Nooteboom and a 2-axled Jeep dolly.

Last but not least, a Scania R124G-420 in 8x2 layout equiped with a large Effer crane.
